The enemy designs in Resident Evil 8 are reportedly the most disturbing in the series. While publisher Capcom has not officially revealed the next entry in its popular undead series, a rumor from late January 2020 circulated online and stirred up buzz regarding the possible upcoming installment’s development. Further speculation surfaced rumoring Resident Evil 8 would release next year.

The development and release Resident Evil 8 rumors didn’t stop there, however, as another bit of speculation claimed to leak details on the game’s protagonist and enemies. Rumors also point at a redesign of Chris Redfield, one of the franchise’s original protagonists alongside his partner, Jill Valentine.

According to @AestheticGamer1 on Twitter, an insider with a strong track record of solid leaks, Resident Evil 8’s enemy designs are the most disturbing in the series. The insider also said the game is “the darkest & most gruesome RE yet.” The Twitter user provided no additional information regarding the game’s development, release, plot, or characters. Fans have taken to the comments section of each respective post and voiced questions asking for clarification. One user wished to know what @AestheticGamer1 meant by “most gruesome,” wondering if the insider meant there would be more bloodshed and gore, or if the story itself was far more disturbing than previous installments. However, no elaborations were given.

Given the popularity of the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, as well as the consistent dedication fans have given to the overall franchise, it’s not a stretch to believe the gaming community will receive an official Resident Evil 8 reveal soon. Regardless, the wait could feel like a lengthy one, especially if the game is developed for, and released on, next-generation consoles and available on PCs. Ray-tracing capabilities would be phenomenal in a game as reportedly brutal as Resident Evil 8.

Another possibility that could make the series’ next installment stand out would be to make it an open world game. While this would certainly dilute some of the designs and mechanics that made previous entries work, mechanical redesigns are not unheard of among popular franchises. Assassin’s Creed has received massive overhauls with its two most recent games (Origins and Oddyssey), and if Capcom were to take a similar intricate and meticulous approach to reworking some of Resident Evil’s puzzles and other mechanics, Resident Evil 8 could be an interesting revamp in an open world environment. However, it’s also true that if it’s not broke, one shouldn’t fix it - and the only way to find out if Capcom is sticking to that adage is to see whether or not Resident Evil 8 is coming soon.
